Create a custom view for SCOM alerts in SCSM

In my last post I wrote about how to connect Operations Manager to Service Manager. The default settings after this has been done and following my guide to ship alerts from SCOM to SCSM is that every incident is just sorted under “All Open Operations Manager Incidents”. This view is fine when you’r just managing a small environment with a couple of servers, not so much fun when managing a couple of hundred servers since it gets really messy. One of the first thing that i did after connecting the products was that i created my own custom views in Service Manager, one view per management pack or function. I will demonstrate how you can make a custom view that contains only the alerts generated for Citrix XenServer, VMware ESXi and of course, Hyper-V 3.0. Continue reading

Veeam Management Pack for VMware 6

Earlier this year, I wrote a blog post about how to monitor your VMware environment. The solution that Veeam has come up with consists of three components; the Enterprise Manager, an Enterprise Manager User Interface and a collector. The solution, which I wrote about here were based on version 5.7 of the Veeam MP.

A couple of weeks ago, Veeam launched their latest updated release of the MP version 6.0. In this release, the solution has been almost completely rebuilt and there are really a lot of news. Monitor your environment using Operations Manager and Service Manager

Sometimes, System Center Operations Manager can look like a very complex and difficult system to learn. There are a lot of rules and monitors to watch out and the reason for this is because most people do their monitoring directly in the Operations Console with all alerts visible.

Instead of using this method, System Center Service Manager should be used to  handle the monitoring of the environment while Operations Manager takes care of the surveillance.

Monitor your VMware environment using Veeam MP

As you already know, Operations Manager is a great product that resides on Management Packs to provide monitoring for our servers and applications. Among the first things you learn when you start using SCOM is to deploy an agent to a server. To provide full monitoring of a server, the hardware should of course be monitored too. Rename your custom Management Packs

When importing a new Management Pack, a custom Management pack should always be created for containing overrides for det imported Management Pack. This is not just a good idea, it´s also Microsoft best practice. The reason why we do this is to separate all of the overrides for our imported Management Packs. Instead of having to clean up our Default Management Pack after deleting a MP, e.g. Exchange Server 2007 is thrown out to be replaced by Exchange Server 2010, just delete the Exchange Server 2007 Overrides MP.
